The next student and class blogging challenge starts in March 2013. This is a special challenge being the 10th one organized.

Why do we need mentors in the blogging challenge?

When I first began the challenge back in 2008, there were only about 200 students taking part and I could visit each of them three times over the ten week period.

But in the last few challenges, there have been  over 1300 students and there was no way I could visit them regularly.  So in 2010 I started asking people in education to mentor a small group 20-30 students over the ten week period of September to November or March to May.

If you register to be a mentor, please keep checking back on this post as I will allocate the students to you and mention in your comment reply who you will be visiting. I will also send you an email reminding you about checking this post early in the challenge.

As soon as students start registering in mid February, I will allocate mentors so please keep checking out the student participant’s page in the main header above to find out who you are mentoring.

Who can be a mentor?

  • classroom teacher or homeschool teacher
  • principal or senior staff or faculty members
  • trainee teachers
  • students who have taken part in at least two sets of previous challenges
  • educational coaches or trainers
  • regular blogger about educational matters

What do you do if you are a mentor?

  • Visit your allocated student blogs at least three times throughout the challenge
  • Leave comments on posts written by the students
  • Continue conversations in the comments
  • Remind them about visiting the main blogging challenge page each week
  • contact me by email or a comment if having concerns or problems (contact is on right sidebar)

So you have read the above and have decided you have the time to visit the student blogs, now it is time to register.

In a comment below, mention the following:

  • A short bio of yourself including some interests
  • Link to your own blog, especially a class blog or your personal blog – allows me to check validity as an educator
  • Age group you would like to mentor

  1. It’s my pleasure to be a mentor. I’m a secondary school teacher in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

    1. Thanks for offering Muhammad, but next week is the last week of the challenge. Perhaps you could help next time when we start again in September.

  2. I would like to mentor some primary school students in the blogging challenge. I teach ICT extension to gifted and highly capable students and I support ICT integration across the Berwick Lodge Primary School (in Melbourne).
We have a number of class blogs in our school as well as individual student blogs. We are fortunate that DEECD gives us access to a free Edublogs Campus Site so all of our blogs end with the .global2.vic.edu.au
Many of my students are participating in the blogging challenge as it is a great way to build up their skills.
My personal blog is http://loisath.edublogs.org, and my class blog is http://berwicklodgeps.global2.vic.edu.au.
Thank you for organising the challenge once again.

    1. G’day Lois,
Finally got time to allocate some more students. Would you look after a group of 13 year olds? Check the student list in the header and scroll down to near the end of the 13 year olds to find your students.

  3. I am interested in helping to mentor students for the blogging challenge.

I have taught special education for 20+ years. I am dedicated to inspiring a passion for learning, hard work, and good character in all areas of life. I teach a fabulous middle school class.
My goal is to create an environment where students are free to learn, discover, and grow, and where adults are inspired to creatively assist students in reaching/exceeding their goals. I also love technology!

This is our first year participating in the challenge. My students are working very diligently on their blogs, and I am having trouble keeping up with their writing – a great problem to have! I will certainly do my best to help mentor wherever you need me.

    Thank you,
    Becki Tharp

  4. Miss W, I too, love to travel! I’m French-Canadian, undergoing my 4th year in an American school in Guadalajara, Mexico as a science teacher. I’m interested in being a mentor with a limited number of blogs since I’m doing many things at once and I wouldn’t want to fail you. I was thinking of mentoring something like 5 to 8 blogs, would that be helpful at all?
I enjoy working with older students.

Look forward to helping out any way I can.
    Thanks

    1. G’day Mr Woods,
Finally got time to allocate some more students. Would you look after a small group of 11 year olds and a small group of 12 year olds? Check the student list in the header and scroll down to the end of the 11 and 12 year olds to find your students.

Had to find a group that had none of your students in it.

    1. G’day Mr Darma,
Finally got time to allocate some more students. Would you look after a group of 10 year olds? Check the student list in the header and scroll down to the end of the 10 year olds to find your students.

  6. Hello Miss W,
I can see that there are groups of students who still need mentors. I have been a mentor in several challenges before and would like to help out, but would prefer a group of students which is not very big in this challenge. As I teach at high school now, I would prefer older students. But I can take any age group as well.

    With best wishes,
    Tatyana Chernaya

  7. Hi everyone. I would love to be a mentor during the challenge, and following it if there is a need.
I’ve blogged with my students for a few years now and fully believe in the power of blogging to raise achievment, motivate students and promote 24/7 teaching and learning. As you can probably tell, it’s a bit of a passion!
I’m finishing my last paper for my Masters this year and it’s all around eLearning so this fits in really well.
My class’s ages range from 12 – 13 and they have quickly become passionate bloggers too. We were together last year and, because their progress was so impressive, we’ve kept them together for a second year so I feel very spoilt.

We’ve got out class blog at:
    http://room4learningjourneys.blogspot.com
From here, you can find all their individual Edublogs on the sidebar.
    My professional learning blog is:
    http://k12motivation.blogspot.com

We also have a Literature Circles blog if you’re like me and passionate about reading too:
    http://hendersonliteraturecircles.blogspot.com

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Justine

    1. Thanks Justine, I have allocated some 13 year olds to you. Please check the student list to find out who they are.

  8. A short bio of yourself including some interests

I am a middle school language arts teacher, and encourage my students to blog at Eagles Write. We did not sign up for the challenge, but may follow them.

I enjoy walking photography and poetry.

I would like to mentor middle school students if possible.

    1. Thanks Sheri for offering to mentor. I have allocated you some 12 year old students. Please check the list to find out who they are.

  9. Thanks to all those who have registered to be mentors.
If you haven’t been allocated students yet, you will be given some when they register in the coming few weeks.

    1. G’day Marci,
Do you also want to register your class blog under the class section as then you will get more visitors from other classes around the world as well as your students getting student visitors? Here is the link to register your class blog.

      1. Hi Miss W, I registered for the class blog as you suggested. Thanks!
Please let me know if you would like me to mentor students.
I’m really looking forward to reading the posts my students create. The first challenge sounds great!
        Thanks,
        Marci

        1. G’day Marci,
Thanks for registering. One important skill for the students is to link their post back to my post. That way I get a pingback and can come to visit them and leave a comment on their post. There is a link on how to make links in the first challenge.

    2. G’day Marci,
Finally got around to adding more mentors. I have added you to a group of 12 year olds. Please check the student list to find out who they are.

  10. Hi! I have been the teacher librarian at a secondary school in Port of Spain, Trinidad for over 7 years. Personally, I love reading ((my nook is always close by), lawn tennis, carnival arts and computers and professionally, I am interested in information and digital literacy and reading promotion.

This year, I have over 100 eager, 11-13 year old girls who are part of our national 1-1 laptop program. They each have their own blogs and are very excited about connecting with learners around the world.
I’d like to mentor kids at this age or older. My library blog is at http://sjcposlib.blogspot.com/ and my students’ blogs may be accessed by clicking on the class tabs on the top left of my homepage.

    1. G’day Renee, Thanks for offering to be a mentor. I will be allocating students tomorrow, so you should receive a comment back regarding who you are linked with.

    2. G’day Renee,
I have allocated you a group of 11 year old students. I don’t think any are from your classes. Please check out the student list to find out who you are mentoring.

  12. Dear Miss W.,
I’m a teacher of English as a second language in Ukraine. My teaching experience is 8 years at state secondary schools. At the moment I’m not working at school so I have more free time and would like to be of some help for your wonderful project. Last autumn (2012) we took part in the student blogging challenge with my daughter and a few pupils of mine and we loved it!
    Here’s our blog: http://kidblog.org/HelenOnyshchenkosClass/
I’m interested in using technology for teaching English
    (here’s my wiki: http://tltcommunity2011.wikispaces.com/)
and understanding how our learning brain works in order to make teaching and learning more effective.
My hobbies outside teaching and learning are swimming, big tennis, pets and reading.
I’d like to mentor younger students from 8 to 11 because my English is not perfect and I can’t give professional comments on common core subjects 🙂

    1. G’day Helen,

Thanks for offering to mentor. I have allocated you a group of 9 year olds. Visit the student list to find out who they are.

      1. Dear Miss W.,
Are 9 y.o. students from Dorian to Kevin in my group? They have no colour… 🙂
        Sincerely,
        Helen O.

        1. G’day Helen,
Yes can you please add those students to your list. When I get back from my holidays tomorrow, I will be checking on the new students who have registered and adding them to mentors.

  13. I would love to be a mentor. I am working with my high school science students to get them to understand the value of blogging and improve their technical writing skills – http://prhscience.wordpress.com/ and http://prhschemistry.wordpress.com/about/ – but results so far are not what I had hoped for. I’m looking forward to seeing other blogs. My own is at http://sanmccarron.blogspot.com/

My interests are in science, nature, ecology, outdoor activities, and charity (poverty and hunger).

    Peace and joy,
    Sandra

  15. Hi Sue,
I will happily mentor again (seems only fair when I am about to register another group of keen bloggers) – about 12 new volunteers this time for our 3rd challenge. Our previous participants are already mentoring the new bunch – such great skills and experiences being passed on. Great buzz in the room yesterday as I made the new blogs and the earlier ones shared their blogs and skills.

Once again Primary age students probably suit me best.
    http://ccoffa.edublogs.org/

    1. G’day Celia,

Wondering if you could look after a group of student mentors just to check out how they are going. You will find on the student list they have (student) after their name. They have all taken part in at least three challenges themselves and want to pay it on by mentoring newer students in the challenge.

Otherwise, I will wait till we have some more students register in the primary grades as these seem to be covered at the moment.

    2. Hi Celia,
Have given you some 10 year old students. I have jumped the group where your students are listed and given you the next group. More will be added as they register.

  16. Hi everybody! Iam Dalel Bourayou. Iam a Tunisian English Teacher.I have been teaching for ten years now and I am in love with my English classes.Happy to join you as a mentor her and mainly share ideas with students worldwide.Best Regards !

I would love to mentor a group of students. I’m happy to mentor students at any age level in the Primary school.
Last year we had a class blog for the first time, although we’ve used wikispaces and Edmodo for a few years.
This year I have a 5/6 class who have their own student blogs too. Our class blog is http://tjps56c.edublogs.org
I’m quite an avid gamer, who enjoys playing Warcraft (when I get any free time).
I also have a personal ICT website which I try to maintain @ http://www.ictwithmissc.weebly.com
    Thanks!

  18. Hi Miss. W,
I would love to mentor a group of students for the Blogging Challenge. I have taught media, computers and French to students in grades 8-12 and junior high Science. I have also been the technology integration lead at our school, helping students and teachers use technology effectively. This year I am not in the classroom as I have been seconded to Alberta Education where I am working on a brand new Career and Technology curriculum for students in grades 5-9. I would prefer to work with students in grades 5-9.

My personal blog is at http://rhondajessen.com.

  19. HI Sue

Had a bad year health-wise last year so took a bit of break from things … including my blog (http://diggers27.wordpress.com/ ) but I am back and keen to participate again.

I am teaching yr 7 and 10 English and Yr 12 Literature this year.

I still interact with students from my first stint as a mentor, esp Mrs Black’s students in Russia … would highly recommend this experience to all teachers.

I am happy to mentor any age … where ever you have a gap 🙂

    cheers

I would love to become a mentor! I have achieved so much in last years two challenges that I think it is time for me to help others achieve what I did. I am very creative and very helpful to anyone. I also am great at logic, sport and I.T which I think will play a big part in this years Challenge. Is it too late to enter my own class blog in the challenge and to have my own students who are interested enter the challenge? I thought I saw something about registration open until mid-February, but I’m not finding active links for student and class blog registration. I would love to find other classrooms and students to communicate with!

    1. Hi Tracy,
The links to register as a class or individual student will be made live in about two weeks time. I have found if I do it too early, students and teachers forget they have registered. 30. I am interested in being a mentor. This will be the first year I fully participate in this project with a class – I will be doing this with 5th graders and possibly with my Middle School group.

I have been a primary classroom teacher for over 18 years, and in November I became our small private school’s technology teacher and the coordinator. I am a mom of 3 and I love using technolgy at home and at work.

My classroom website/blog for the last few years has been http://ecafirstgrade.weebly.com/

prior to that this http://ecakinderkids.weebly.com/2008-2009.html was my communication with parents.

I just started a technology lab website at http://ecatechlab.weebly.com/ that I use with the students k-8.

I never found the time to keep up with my professional blog, so it is sadly out of date.

I would like to mentor 5th grade students.

    1. G’day Amy, Thanks for offering to mentor. I have allocated you a group of 11 year olds. Visit the student list to find out who they are.

PS I notice many of your students have joined but the settings on their weebly blogs means someone needs a password to login to read the post or leave a comment. This might need to be changed to make the most of the challenge which includes reading and writing on others blogs.

  31. I would love to join as a mentor. I have been teaching technology for many years and this year am teaching a course on digital literacy and citizenship. The method students have used to record their journey has been through student blogs. My teacher website is https://sites.google.com/a/asmilan.org/wolpowitz/ and you can find the information in the course Global Connections. In separate email I can give you a temporary password to login and view my student blogs but as per agreement with our families, we cannot share them as they have private information. I am happy to work with any age.
    Looking forward to the collaboration.
    Tamara (twolpowitz@asmilan.org)

    1. Tamara,
Thanks for offering to mentor. I have given you a group of 13 year olds. They are from the same class and doing a lot on mediaeval theme.

You can find their blogs in the page in the header labelled Students – March 2013.

  32. Dear Sue:

    It would be my pleasure.
I hope in new session the teachers pay more attention to their students to update their blogs regularly.

        1. Thanks Astaneh – you now have the students 16 and older – mainly from Russia, Tunisia and Honduras – great mix of countries.

        2. As usually well done Miss Sue and I will do my best.

Actually I should thank you because of new banner on top of this page.
The tiles have arranged easy to find, specially for students and their category. But what happened to challenge Logo?

          Thanks again

        3. Astaneh,
You need to thank Sue Waters and Ronnie Burt from Edublogs for the new look of the blog. I think they might be working on a logo and badge for it. This theme apparently is very good for iPads and iPhones.

  33. Greetings. I’m interested in becoming a mentor for this challenge.
I’m a Media Specialist for an Instructional Resource Center and I work with Teacher Education Students at a local community college.
My interest is exploring and sharing web 2.0 tools; I share what I learn with students and faculty.
I would prefer working with a younger group of students (2nd-5th grade).
I look forward to hearing from you.

    1. Dinah,
Thanks for offering to mentor. I have given you the first group of 10 year olds. Many are from the same class.

You can find their blogs in the page in the header labelled Students – March 2013.

  34. This sounds very interesting. I would like to be a Mentor. I am an Educational Technologist and am responsible for the entire Staff Training and Development along with curriculum integration of technology at our school. We are a 1:1 iPad school and work very hard to integrate many different kinds of technology techniques into different classes. Prior to this I was a trainer with Apple Education and prior to that I was a classroom teacher. I have been in the educational world working with technology in the classroom for over 10 years. I have blogged for years and however just recently started a new venture with a blog focusing on technology, the classroom and curriculum. I am comfortable mentoring any aged student. Feel free to place me where you need, as I have no preference (I have taught 3-12 graders) and am currently at a Middle / High Prep School.

Here is my newest Blog –

    Thanks
    Wendy Phillips

    1. Wendy,
Thanks for offering to mentor. I have given you the first group of 13 year olds. Many are from the same class and working on mediaeval theme for history.

You can find their blogs in the page in the header labelled Students – March 2013.

  35. Interested. I teach teachers in our graduate school of education. We use Comments4Kids on Twitter to blog with students, and each student in my class creates a blog. I have also written a published article on blogging, which I can send to you. In any event, this is one of the blogs being used for my present course, Integrating Technology and Literacy.

You can find examples of student blogs using the Spring 2012 page tab, The spring 2013 class just started. We have done lots of collaborations with classes, esp. elementary school ones, and we are blogging partners for several classes right now. We are collaborating with 5 classes in Iowa and one in Wisconsin, and write replies back and forth on their blogs.

In addition to signing up myself, I can see if students in my class want to join in this project.

    1. Judy,
Thanks for offering to mentor. I have given you the first group of 12 year olds. They are from the same class.

You can find their blogs in the page in the header labelled Students – March 2013.
