I have spent a lot of time this week trying to find different resources to use when talking about leaving our digital footprint.

These first two videos I use each set of challenges as it shows how easily a footprint can be created. It is not only you but your relatives, friends, newspapers etc also add to your footprint.

Then I thought with so many students now involved in social media such as facebook, instagram, pinterest and twitter, how much information are they leaving by not checking their privacy settings but leaving things on default?

Watch this video to see how easy it is to find out information about you. Jenny Luca, director of ICT and eLearning at a college in Australia used this with her grade 7-12 students. Read her post to find out their reactions. Jenny then directed me to another tweet from Doug Peterson in Canada linking to this post from lifehacker.

You also leave a footprint when you sign up to join websites such as Moshi Monsters, Voki, Animoto and photopeach.  Do you ever check the terms of service or privacy settings? Have you joined a site that says you must be over 13 years old yet you are only 10?

Being connected with all this technology means everyone is leaving a digital footprint.

Activity 1. Watch the first two videos above then leave a comment on this post about something that you found very interesting in one of the videos. Write a post explaining the differences between the videos. Which did you prefer and why?

Activity 2. After watching the two videos, write a post about your digital footprint. Is it positive or negative? Would you be proud to have your grandparents or your future grandchildren look at everything you have included in your digital footprint? Why or why not? Maybe Google your name to see what is online about you, that you might not have put there. Remember to Google your nickname used in online games etc as information might be included there.

Activity 3. Imagine you are debating this topic: It is better to have a negative digital footprint than no footprint at all. Give three reasons to support each side of the debate.

Activity 4. Watch the third video. Why is it important to check out the settings whenever you buy a new device? Default settings often allow the manufacturer to gain information about you without you realising it.

Activity 5. Should all teachers, principals and parents have a digital footprint in this time of technology? Google your teacher or principal (with their permission first) or even your parents. What have they got online? Do they have some information you think should not be there? Discuss it with them. Write a post about the discussion you had without giving away personal information to your readers.

Over Easter I am going to be adding to our list of web tools to use in the challenge (see list on sidebar) I am going to be sorting them according to how old you have to be to use them, whether they are free or you have to sign up, whether there is an education version or not and whether that is free or paid and finally what is the tool/app used for.

Activity 6. I would like your help to get the list organized. Write a post about 5 of your favourite web tools or apps. In your post mention how old you need to be to use it, whether you had to sign up to use it and what type of tool or app it is eg mindmapping, poll/survey, slideshow. Also tell me why you enjoy using the tool or app.

Activity 7. Here are some websites to visit related to cybersafety and digital footprints. Visit some of them and write a post, create a poster or glogster, create a cartoon about what you found out. Your teacher might also give you other websites to visit.

  • ACMA Australia – cybersafety for young kidskids and teens.
  • Google has some digcitizenship adventures relating to digital footprints – more for middle and high school students
  • Kidsmart from the UK has some great tips and information

Activity 8. Mainly middle and high school students – There are 9 elements to being a good digital citizen. Read this post then write your own post about what you consider are the most important parts of the nine elements. Are there certain areas you need to improve on? Why?

Activity 9. There are both advantages and disadvantages to being able to connect and communicate more easily. Write a post or run a debate on this topic. Maybe create a comic strip showing each side.

  1. I am very interested in seeing how easy it is to know so much about someone with little to no effort. It is like being a detective but there are people that you can find out about just by looking, no investigating, and no trouble at all.

  2. I really liked the videos. The videos were interesting. I should think before I should post anything.

  3. Those videos sorta scare me because, anything that goes on the internet stays there, even though I know I will not put anything I will probably regret later.

  4. I really enjoyed the video. It made me realize I need to be smart about what I do online. From now on I will be safer when on the internet.

  5. I thought that the third video was very interesting. It was funny to see people’s reactions to the guy telling them everything about them that he learned through their twitter, instagram, and facebook. But, It was also kind of scary. If you really think about it, everything that you say or do on social media can be tracked down, including all of your personal information. We need to be more careful about what we post on social media.

  6. I think that the first video was very interesting, more interesting than the second one. This because it seemed more professional and trustable. If the second video were more easier to hear and intriguing then I’d probably feel the same about both of them. When I see a video I look a lot more into it then most people. I look at how much effort would’ve been put into it.

  7. I watched the video about My Digital Footprint. It was fantastic. I find it very interesting to look up and learn about certain people in your family.

  8. Dear Miss W,
I watched all of the videos and I made a post about how your digital footprint works and you can just search somebody’s name up and all of there private info and how it can affect your career and that you have to be save when you use the internet. Here is the link so you can come check it out.

  9. I watched the video that talked about My Digital Footprint. I think it is amazing that you can find all different things about yourself or family members from just searching a name. To know people see everything you do and can be passed on to a lot of people amazes me. The video hit the summary spot on about anybody’s digital footprint. It really helps me be cautious about these things online.

  10. Hi Ms. W!
I found it interesting that things are added to someone’s digital footprint even after they died. It makes sense, but I just never thought about it before. Can other people add to your digital footprint by posting something about you online? I hope I can leave a positive digital footprint.
    Have a good week!
    Ahmad

  11. This was a really great video! It taught me a lot about my digital footprint and what I should want my footprint to be like.

  12. I thought the videos were interesting because I didn’t realize everyone can see that stuff even if your account is private. I thought it was funny to see their reactions because if it was me, I’d be freaking out. But I thought it was a good idea and I’m sure they will think about what they out on the internet now.

  13. Wow! This was a really great video! It taught me a lot about my digital footprint and what I should want my footprint to be like. I wonder how other people see my digital footprint? I see mine and a lot of others peoples footprints as a positive one.

  14. I thought this video was very helpful. This video shows me what to share with people and what not to do. I feel like I can trust this video with my regular life.

  15. The Jack Vale video could really make you think about what your putting out there for the world to see. It is creepy to think that complete strangers could look at your personal life and find out things about you. I would not like it if somebody came up to me and started telling me things they read off my profile. After watching this I will think harder about what I post online.

  16. Wow, I didn’t know that you could find out so much about a person just by looking closely at what they post. You can really find stuff out about a person just by your username and pictures.

  17. I thought that the way he could figure out who they were and what they were doing was interesting. He did not know who they were but could just know personal information about them.

  18. I really liked the Jack Vale video. I found it interesting and scary how he easily could find out a lot of information about a complete stranger. It made me think about how someone could be doing this right now to anyone. It also made me think about what I should say or post before doing it.

  19. Something I found interesting and really creepy was that by the age of 0 months you are already on facebook, instagram, twitter etc, and you already have a digital footprint before you are born! For example I searched my name up and a fair few things came up about me that I didn’t know where up on the internet.

  20. Hi Miss W,
I have finished the Week 3 blogging challenge.
It was really interesting i did activity

  21. I liked both of the videos but I preferred the first video than the second one because it was more understandable for me whilst the second video was a bit more confusing than the first one. If the second one had was a bit more understandable I would have felt the same way about both of them.

  22. I think that the first video was very interesting, more interesting than the second one. This because it seemed more professional and trustable. If the second video were more easier to hear and intriguing then I’d probably feel the same about both of them. When I see a video I look a lot more into it then most people. I look at how much effort would’ve been put into it.

  23. I think it was interesting to try and see what mark we leave online. I couldn’t find anything about myself though, because I have a lot of privacy settings on accounts I have.

  24. I think that the videos were interesting. They really make you realize that everything you post can be seen by anyone. It will make me more careful about everything I post from now on.

  25. This is very true, I think that people should be very careful about what they put on the internet. You never know what will happen to the things that you post.

  26. I think that the second video was better than the first one, because firstly, it was more interesting and had loads of good information. It was also very clear to understand what they were trying to tell us.

  27. I preferred the second video much more than the first video because they actually gave you an example of someone and don’t just talk briefly about your digital footprints. What I found interesting was that Google actually recorded everything you search up for.

  28. In the second video I found it interesting how almost everything you do from when you are born to when you die is kept track of.

  29. I think this video helped me realize that whenever I log in to any website I leave a mark. It’s also pretty scary how you can find out anything about anyone through social media. Whatever you post stays with you throughout your life. It’s better to think before you post.

  30. I really liked the second one I think it taught a very good lesson not to put to much information on social media. The first one was also very good for learning purposes.

  31. These videos are very interesting. Especially knowing that people around the world can find what sites you have made and all your history. Also it helps me understand that you shouldn’t post things on the internet that are bad because that could affect you. I didn’t know that it traces you back to when you were born.

  32. I liked the digital dossier one the best. It was intresting that your digital dossier starts before you are even born and goes on after you die.

  33. I think that is important to not just post stuff on the internet that could make your life over for you. You should make sure you don’t post anything like your address, phone number and where you live. You need to live a safe life.

  34. Dear Miss W.
I believe that is better to leave no footprint at all because all though you are getting your self out there, you are getting yourself out there negatively.

  35. My teacher doe have some things on youtube, facebook, and linkedin. I don’ think that the stuff she has on those sites are bad.

  36. I think that the third video was the most interesting because it shows you how people can find out a lot of your information just by accessing your Instagram. It was very scary how that guy just walked up to random people and new their dog, their name, their job, and what they had for lunch.

  37. I thought that the third video was a little bit creepy, I mean if i was them I’d be embarrassed that he found out all of those things about me online. I think I will definitely be more careful with pictures and other stuff i put on line.

  38. Dear Miss W.
I do not believe that my digital footprint is either positive or negative. I looked my self up as you suggested, and the internet didn’t even know my name. I believe that this is an important lesson too learn and many do not realize how insecure the internet really is.
    http://epi12.edublogs.org/

  39. The third video tells you that if you don’t watch out people can find you and your information you can toggle the settings before you start sending photos on instagram or tweet on twiter so only you can find it if you search and search on the internet for them.
you can check out my blog at stryker14.edublogs.org

  40. I found it interesting that everything I do on the internet is tracked and it makes me want to be more careful on the stuff I post and do online.

  41. The video was very interesting. It said that anyone can see what is done online which is very true and can be scary at some moments. To be safe online you shouldn’t be mean, disrespectful and inappropriate because you can be found by anyone and get into trouble. Once you sign there is a mark which is left. The mark you leave should be a good one.

  42. This is very interesting to talk and learn about. This shows what happens to my information when I put it on the internet. It is also very weird to think that my personal things are all over the internet.

  43. Hi Ms.W,
I really liked the first video. I liked it because there were a lot of facts. Teachers have talked to me about internet safety, but this video really hit home.
    Sincerely,
    Emster5

  44. Dear
    Ms. W,
I found this video very interesting, and scary because people can track me my whole life.
    Sincerely,
    Phorses10

  45. Dear Mrs. W,
This was pretty interesting but it was also very creepy. The good thing about the video was that it really showed you what can happen if you share your personal information to the public. The question I have is how can you still have a footprint while you are DEAD?

    Sincerely,

    Anklebreaker11

  46. Hi Mrs. W,
I think the last video was insane. If someone were to do that to me I would be really scared. I would think they were stoking me of something.

  47. Dear Miss W.
I believe that the second video got the point across better by giving many examples. Although the first video was also very educating. I try not to post anything on my student blog or google+ page that is about were I live or that is just a bit too interesting.
    With my regards,
    Nicholas

  48. Dear Ms. W,

I found this creepy. I think that being tracked down your whole life is scary. I am now going to watch out for what pictures I post online and what websites I go onto.

    Sincerely,

    gymnast3

  49. I found it shocking how so many people put all of there life information on the internet. I am guessing they are looking for a person to confide in because they do not have many kind friends. Interesting social experiment!

  50. I found it very creepy and also very interesting that people can know everything about you just my going on Facebook , Google + and lots more. I noticed that both had the same message. I found it creepy because someone you might not know could be looking at all your information. I also found it interesting because people might be looking at your information write now. I found out one was a investigation wile the other one was informational!!!

  51. I found it very interesting how both videos portrayed the same message, but in two completely different ways. I never thought about your digital footprint. The videos show how people can find out information about you, and know what websites you have been on. One video was more experimental while the other was more informational.

  52. I found this very creepy. They keep track of anything you’ve searched or signed for. I don’t think people should have that authority to keep that information. It is also creepy that they can reach you all the way before you were even born. I find that disturbing.

  53. I find it weird that their is so much private information about you on the internet that you dont really know about.

  54. I found this very creepy. I find it creepy because I did not know that people could simply search your full name and find out everything about you. It is also creepy how you have a digital footprint before you were even born

  55. Watching this video reminded me of how easy it is to have your own information shared without your knowledge. The web can easily be hacked therefore you can easily be hacked, and people can find you. When you think about it it’s kind of scary.

  56. Watching this video reminded me of how easy it is to have your own information shared without your knowledge. I will be more careful next time.

  57. I thought that the video was very interesting and, honestly, a little creepy. It was interesting because some of the things the video said I didn’t know about it. The creepy part was when Google tracks you every time you use a Google browser because I didn’t know that. And that your phone company can track you from your phone. Do they really save everything that we do on the internet? Everything? Now I’ll think about what I post on the web.

  58. Hi Miss W,
I found these videos to be very informative and interesting. It is interesting how fast a digital footprint can be passed on and how a digital footprint can exist without one being knowledgeable of it being there. These videos show that one has to be more aware of what they are putting online because we are leaving behind digital footprints that we may or may not what to leave behind. If we are unaware of a footprint we have left behind and did not want to leave it, it can be very hard to completely erase the footprint. The footprint could have already been viewed and passed on by other people, therefore your footprint might not ever be completely erased.
Here are the rest of my responses to Week 3 blog challenge:

  59. These videos didn’t necessarily surprise me but rather made clearer an issue I’m already aware of. It’s sort of crazy to think how much information of ours has been tracked digitally, and much without our knowledge or even consensus. I recognize the importance of thinking before acting online because the footprint left behind is very permanent and difficult, if not impossible, to reverse. The hypothetical story of Andy highlighted for me just how much of our information is in fact, to some degree, public and almost scared me into really becoming aware and responsible for the digital footprint I leave behind.

  60. I thought it was very interesting how google can know what you research online. It was also interesting that everybody has a Digital Footprint before you are even born.

  61. I am now not going to shop online. Well, at least I have ross, forever 21, and target with me still.

  62. I thought that the videos, were kind of scary , and it made me think about , what kind of thing are on the web, about me. I think the video, made everyone, know how, crazy the internet is. And how, nothing is really gone. I like the video, but it kind of scared me at the same time.

  63. I love all of the information that this post had. I was aware that everything i have ever done on the internet has been tracked but i wasnt aware that all of this started before i was born. Wow!

  64. that is very true about both of the videos . that is why i never send some one about someone else that is mean or a weird picture of them that they didn’t want me to send .

  65. I think that the videos were very intriguing. I was surprised that everything you do on the internet is saved to somewhere. It made me really second guess everything I put on-the-line.

  66. 2) My parents are very aware of what can happen on the internet and have expressed their thoughts about my digital footprints many times. They always remind me to be careful of what I do and what can happen with the information about me that is put on the web. I believe that I have done a good job with my digital footprint, with the help of my parents.

  67. The two videos were very similar, interesting, and I could relate to both of them. They introduced some ideas I already knew, but also talked about things I hadn’t though about, like how your digital footprint begins before you are even born. I believed that the second video was more relate-able and some of the things he talked about, I was already doing.

  68. I think the videos were very interesting. It really made me think about what I post. It surprised me that you what you post on the internet never goes away. It also surprised me that your digital footprint starts from before you are born. The videos really made me think about what I post online.

  69. I think the third post was very intriguing. The fact that a person can access your online posts that simply is kind of a refresher. I simply mean that all of us should be a bit more careful with the things we post. I personally think a bit about the things I post, and annually go back and delete unneeded posts. I hope everybody takes this video into consideration. The only thing I wonder is if people can get into private accounts.

  70. I found the video very interesting about how everything i do on the internet will come up somewhere. Also that i is important to always be careful about what you post because it could get you in trouble. Also what no matter what you do and if you think you wont get in trouble you probably will and it could come back to you. I think it was a good way to explain all of things that could go wrong with that. I made a blog about what i think. http://kidblog.org/Rm103Classof2014/wp-admin/post-new.php

    1. Hi Alec,
I went to read your post but it looks like it had not been published yet. The link you gave me was to your admin area asking me to login. I will change the link once I see your post is published by Mrs Allen.

  71. I really liked the second video! It made it so realistic by giving this person a name. It also gave examples that most people could relate to, such as posting pictures and posts to Facebook. What are some ways to get people more aware of there digital dossier?

    1. G’day Macaire,
I wonder if making more of those little video documentaries or public service announcements using real people would help. I wonder how much parents know about digital footprints?

  72. I found the second video most interesting. I especially liked how it used a specific example and led us through his life as a Digital Citizen, letting us see into his life as we went along. It really opened my eyes to what kind of footprint I’m already leaving behind as a grow up. It really spoke to me and I have come to realize that I should always be extra careful of what info I put out there where the whole world can see it. I only have one question. Why aren’t more people careful about what they put online?

I wrote a post about this. Here is the link. http://kidblog.org/Rm103Classof2014/926b430b-1146-4726-803a-4ca6326bc736/my-digital-footprint-2/

  73. I really liked how in the second video it showed and described the cycle of a digital footprint. These videos can help many people know more technology knowledge.

  74. The video I enjoyed the most was the second one. It was more entertaining than the first video. My favorite video of all though was the social media experiment. I believe that it shouldn’t be easy as that to get information about someone. How is it that easy to learn something about someone that easily?

    1. G’day Zach,
Remember that social media experiment depended firstly upon having the geo locator turned on on your mobile device. It is turned on as a default and most people don’t turn it off.

  75. I think these videos really showed what you can put out there on the internet, and how there is next to nothing that you can post that isn’t taken in by the internet and kept there forever.

  76. Hi Miss W,
I found these videos very interesting. I didn’t know that everyone has a digital dossier and leaves behind so much information. It made me think a lot more about how much I leave online. I really liked the last video, too. It was interesting to see the people’s reactions to Jack knowing their information just by looking at a single Instagram photo.

  77. Hi Ms. W!
I found it interesting that things are added to someone’s digital footprint even after they died. It makes sense, but I just never thought about it before. Can other people add to your digital footprint by posting something about you online? I hope I can leave a positive digital footprint.
    Have a good week!
    Maggie

    1. Hi Maggie,
If someone takes a photo of you at a party with your friends, adds it to their facebook timeline and tags you and each of your friends, then they have added to your footprint. Usually you get a message saying you have been tagged and that is where you need to ask that friend to untag you if the image is not really appropriate.

  78. Hello,
I really enjoyed the videos! I learned that whatever I do on the internet follows me. It’s kind of like as I get older the more things I do the more things I add to my digital footprint. It made me think more to be be safer and more cautious to what I put out online. This is very interesting to me and I’m glad you shared it with everyone.

    From,
    Georgia

  79. I really like the video, I learned some things that I never knew. It is kinda scary knowing that anyone can see what I post or do. After I have seen this I will try to be safer online and not give any private information.

  80. Dear Ms.W,

I really enjoyed both of the videos.I thought that both of the quality if the videos were good.Something I found interesting was our digital footprint starts when we are in our mothers tummy because I thought that a digital footprint is when you do something in the internet.

    From Brendan

  81. Activity 1

I found that the 3rd video was quite interesting because it tells us that what you post will be nearly impossible to remove and I think that the video tells us to be carefull about what you post online
The difference bettween the three videos that they were all were about how to stay safe online and how to use your online footprint in a good way

  82. Activity 1:
I found the second video interesting because it was a lot more in-depth than the the first video. I have learnt about your web footprint before, but never like that; I never thought about the fact that your birth records and pictures and posts by other people can be a part of your digit dossier. I also never thought that one’s records could continue to grow even after they died. Ultimately, I thought that the first video was a better introduction to the concept of a web footprint, but the second video was better at providing the details that you may want to know after learning the general information.

  83. Activity One

In the second video, I thought it was interesting how our digital dossier begins before we are even born. It begins with our first sonogram photo and then builds and builds throughout our entire lives. I never thought about how much of me is out on the internet, every time I have entered my name or searched something, it all adds up into one huge digital dossier. It’s incredible!

  84. I found the second video very interesting because it explained how a single person can have a large impact with their digital footprint. I thought that the use of “following” a person throughout their life was a smart one because it represented how you, or another person, leaves behind a digital footprint.

  85. Here is my link to activity 1:

I also apologize for doing the entire first activity as a comment on this post. I was confused that part of the activity was meant to be done as a comment, and part as a blog post on my own blog. I have now posted to my blog the part of activity 1 that is supposed to be there, but it is also written as a comment.

  86. I find the second video interesting because it gives a specific and realistic description of a digital footprint by following “Andy” through his life. I think the first video was created to seem more general. However, I believe it was not as powerful or convincing as the second because it didn’t give as many specific examples as to how public and open one can be on the internet. This means I had to just trust what was being stated in the first video, whereas in the second video, I was given real evidence. That is why I prefer the second video over the first.

  87. Activity One:
I found both videos very interesting. In the first video, it said “what you do can be permanent”. I agree with that for the most part, but was intrigued because I thought everything someone does on the internet was always permanent. The two videos had very different approaches. The first video was very straightforward and its main message was that everything you do online leaves a digital footprint. The second video created an example and portrayed the person’s digital footprint and how it progresses throughout his life. The second video was more relatable because it used a person as an example. I prefer the second video because it opened my eyes and showed me how digital footprints apply to everyday life, not just the fact that they do.

    Activity Two:
I wrote the post and looked myself up online and found information about myself and my friends and family. It was very interesting to see. I made a post, here is the link: http://kirrablog8.edublogs.org/2014/04/01/digital-footprints/

    Activity Six:
This is the link to my post of the apps/web tools I use and why: http://kirrablog8.edublogs.org/2014/04/01/5-appsweb-tools-i-use/

  88. After watching both the videos I realized just how amazing our internet is. Everything you do can be tracked through it and I find that fascinating and also a bit creepy.

Some of the differences I noticed between the two videos is that the first one seemed more like an ad while the other seemed like a school project. I personally think the first video caught my attention more because it wasn’t just the same voice and images.
Here is my post on digital foot print: http://vivi8sms.edublogs.org/2014/04/01/digital-footprint/

  89. The second video, my favorite of the two, substantiated that information that you leave on the internet can be easily searched for and found by anyone. What I wonder is that if a normal person can find your adress, age, etc. in a few seconds, what does the government know about you?

  90. Hello,
One thing I found interesting about the videos, was that they did a very good job of making you think, stressing the importance, and yes, even scaring you a little. They made it so that you didn’t just look at it, and then forget about it.

A difference I noticed was that the first video kind of struck me as an advertisement, whereas the second one came across to me as more of a documentary. I found the first video more general, and the second one more specific, and detailed.
    Thanks!

P.S. I mean this in the most respectful way, but I think it is kind of ironic that after watching these two videos, we are being told to log on to a website and leave a comment…

  91. I have always known that I leave digital footprints everywhere I go online, but I never knew how many I left (even since birth)! I found it both interesting and surprising that the maker of the second video assumed that nothing would change in online/media/social networking/etc. between the time Andy was born and the time Andy Jr. was born. A difference I noticed is that the first video seems to be more of an ad and the second seems to be a documentary. I think this may be the case because the first may be put on television, youtube, etc. for someone to look at quickly and the second might be for someone to watch if they are interested or concerned with digital footprints. I preferred the second video because it not only did a clearer job of explaining what digital footprints are, but it did a better job of showing the impact and size that they have too.

  92. By Liam :
The first video is more of a short quick information video with quick facts about social medias and how information can be quickly found.
The second video was longer and more in depth about your digital footprint. The second video really tells you how information about you can always be found from the moment you are born, to the moment when you die.
The third video was more of an experiment and a video interacting with real people. The third video demonstrated how easy it is to find out peoples personal information using social media. I prefer watching the third video because it really shows how you can get all this information just using information.
    Erin G:
The part in the video that I found the most interesting was that everything you post on the interest is collected and stored without you even knowing. If you ever posted something on the internet, it is possible that someone can find out that information about you, even if they have no idea who you are. I think it’s kind of creepy to know that a random stranger can find out any information about you that wasn’t intended for them to see. When I Googled my name, a bunch of random girls came up, but none of them were me. I think that the videos teach you to be smart online, because you never know who is going to be searching your name, or how it could affect you.
    Kyle K:
I found it interesting in video two when they were talking about “Andy” and how he has a bunch of pictures online from the time he was born to even after he dies. It was kind of not true because a lot of people don’t put pictures of their babies and children online, like me, when I search my name it comes up with a bunch of basketball players, that are boys, yet I’m a girl. I liked the second video better because it actually told a story about “someone” and they showed a lifetime of pictures of a person and how you can almost find out anything about a person from social media or the internet in general. It also warns you that anything could happen, someone could find you just from an Instagram post or a Facebook post, it’s very scary.
    Taylor Z: Activity 3
Its is better to have no footprint than a bad footprint. If you have a bad footprint plenty of people can see it. It can affect what you do in the future. If you have no footprint, they (as in jobs, etc) won’t be able to judge what you put on line. Some jobs won’t hire you if they find inappropriate pictures or posts online.

  93. The two videos we good but they didn’t express what they wanted in a “fun” way. Although it did have a lot of information it wasn’t interesting to me. I did though learn a lot about what happens in the world and that sometimes even if I don’t want my profile to be on the internet, in my society it will be.

    By Camryn

  94. I found interesting how the computer can make and shape someones identity before he or she could even begin. The first video is now just telling you what could happen online when in the second video it actually shows you a real life example of a baby boy Andy growing up. I preferred the first video because I could remember more seeing it in more of a visual way like that.
    By Rebecca M.

  95. I found the videos very interesting! It really makes you think about everything I comment, watch, join, and play on. Now I know to be careful about everything I do online, because it never really goes away. It’s really cool that the footprint continues to grow as you do!

  96. I found these videos very interesting. In the first video, I was surprised to see that so many people can see what you are doing and what they can do with that information. I learned more in the second video and was very surprised that people can see what you are doing even before you are born.
    By Molly

  97. I liked both the videos, but the second one was a little more interesting. I thought that the second one was more interesting because they used a real live scenario and it makes people relate to it more.
    By Adrienne

  98. I liked the first video because of the way it was presented.
I liked the pictures and the short and sharp sentences that got to the point .
It’s scary the way if you show one thing it will spread.
All of these videos were about the Digital Footprint, but the first one was mainly about what is a digital footprint. The second one was about what other people put online about you and the last one was about be careful what you post on the Internet world.

  99. I found both videos very interesting. It was weird that info comes out even before you are born! It is also weird that as you grow it expands into more info. People should be careful of what they post on the internet and think twice.

  100. Hey Miss. W,

I prefer the first video. It doesn’t give you as much information about what is in your digital footprint, but it shows you what can be done with it, and it is more visual for me. The information sticks in my head more from the first video.
I thought it was interesting that everyone has access to your digital footprint, it’s in the world for everyone to see. Makes you think about what you do online.
    Heres my post:

  101. I thought is was interesting the scope of our digital footprints are. I didn’t realize how big of a mark everyone leaves on the internet.

  102. I think that in the second video it was really interesting to see how everything we put on the Internet goes into our “dossier” and stays there for the rest of our lives.

  103. A1) I thought it was interesting just how easy it is to obtain information about everyone. I realized it before, but I never exactly understood it.

A2) I looked up my usernames but got no information. I then looked my name up and got results (because of my parents) but there was minimal information. I consistently give fake information and that information showed up, but my personal information got no results.

A6) I like to use Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter. I’m fairly sure that you must be 13 or older to use them. They are all social websites or apps. I use them to connect with my friends and keep up with celebrities. (haha oops)

  104. Something that I found very interesting was that the second video covered how your digital footprint starts before you’re even born. I hadn’t thought about how some parts of your digital footprint you can’t control. All of the lessons I’d heard about my digital footprint were all about the choices you make everyday when you go online. This brought a new angle to my attention.

  105. Activity One

While both videos displayed a clear message of how your digital footprint expands and grows. The second video, I found I could relate to more. I have done many of the things that Andy has already done, and now know how much of those things are permanently online.

    Activity Two

When I look up my name, people can get a general picture on what type of person I am. With significant research, they would be able to access my age, what I look like, and other details that I might not want to share with the public. There is also data that is protected, but I do not know how much it would take for a person to get into that “protected’ data.

    Activity 6

In many of the websites or apps I have used, there has been a necessary login. Whether it be for school, or just something I enjoy doing, almost all of the time there is a request for some amount of personal information. Before, I have never really paid attention to these questionnaires, but over the years I have started to realize what is possible with this information. On a scale from 1-10, (1 being least amount of information…)
    I like to use:
    Instagram: 7
    Gmail: 5
    Youtube: 5
    Jupiter Grades: 4
    Appzilla:1

Many of these apps require a lot of personal information, as shown above. The question I have for everyone is, how hard is it to get to this information?

  106. Hi there everybody,

We really enjoyed this week’s challenge here in Ireland. Digital footprints is a fantastic topic to explore and something we really need to be aware of! Our class is still very young, we are only 6 and 7 years old. However we understand that the internet can be a dangerous place and we need to stay safe.

Please visit our blog post for this week at
    http://firstclassroom12.weebly.com/1/post/2014/03/student-blogging-challenge-week-3.html

    Thank you,
    Ms. Glynn and Room 12

  107. I found it interesting how big our digital footprints are. I wouldn’t have thought just how big of a mark everyone we know leaves on the internet.

  108. Both videos really made me think. I had learned much about digital footprints in school, but I didn’t know as much about what was recorded. The second video did a great job of illustrating this. It went through a life, explaining how the person’s digital footprint grew. It helped me realize what actually goes on in the forming of that footprint. The first video was more vague, and told more about the dangers of the footprint. It didn’t give many specifics, but warned others about the dangers of putting things online and how it never really goes away.

Personally, I liked both videos. But they are made differently and are suited for different situations. The second video goes more in-depth about specific things that makes up your digital footprint, while the first video is more of a warning. In terms of making children and adults aware of digital footprints, I think the first video is better. It gives a better understanding of how the footprints are bad, and how they can be permanent.

  109. I found it very interesting how both videos portrayed the same message, but in two completely different ways. One was more experimental while the other was more informational.

  110. My parents don’t let me have instagram, snap chat, twitter, or Facebook because of leaving digital footprints. I liked was the first video because I liked the way it told me infromation and how it kept me intrigued. The videos made me feel a little bit unsafe. I know that sometimes there is a geolocator in those sites so that also makes me a little uncomfortable. I would be cautious about what I post and what I say on those sites if I head an account.

The second video told me lots of information that I didn’t know. For example, when your friends or family post a picture or comment about you and you have no control over what they put on the internet, and how your file or online form can be dangerous because it has a lot of private information. Your digital footprint just keeps on growing even though you might not know it.
    ~Madtowngymnast

  111. These videos, especially the last one, revealed some things to me that I did not know before. The last one was kind of creepy but gave a good reference about how literally ANYONE can learn ANYTHING about you if they look hard enough. That is pretty scary. Its also pretty scary how people who know what there doing can track what you search, where you are, and what your doing just because you have a phone in your pocket or you made a search sometime in the recently.

  112. I found the 2 videos interesting and I didn’t know that my digital footprint started before I was born!

  113. Hi Miss W,

We watched both videos and we were surprised at how big our digital footprint is, even though we are only kids, and by how early our digital footprint started. We were shocked at how quickly our digital footprint spreads.

We Googled our teacher and found lots of things on Twitter but her Facebook settings were good because we couldn’t see her posts. Luckily she is careful about her digital footprint so there was nothing inappropriate. We Googled other people in our class and family members and were surprised by how much appeared.

We are going to be very careful in the future!

from Mrs Chegwidden and 5/6 Cortes

  114. After watching the two videos, my favorite one was “Youth and Media”. I think it was more appealing then “Privacy Student Info Video” because It gave you a scenario showing you how your digital footprint starts before you can control it. As where the first video just tells you what can be done with the things you put on the internet. The scenario in the second video can be made personal, and that’s what made me like it better. The thing I found most interesting about “Youth and Media” is how they explain that you are being recorded and are leaving a footprint before you are born. To me, its kinda scary to think that even before you have control over what’s being posted about you, its already being done.

  115. I liked the second video more than the first. I like how the second video had a story. A difference that stuck out to me between the two videos is that the second video is narrated and the first is not. I think the second video was more personable than the first one, and that is another reason why I enjoyed the second video more.

  116. I learned many information in this video. If you log in to a website, you must log out when you get out of the website. You mustn’t take a picture of yourself or use your real name in the websites and internet. Even you die or delete the personal information or files, it should be somewhere inside the computer. So, be careful when you are using the computer.

  117. I did not know that Google could get all that info from looking at what you search and your emails also from now on I am going to be very careful about what I put on the internet.

    Thanks Ms W.

    Paul ( ‘__’ )

  118. Hi Mrs W!

All the videos were very interesting because if we face it, it actually happens. I love how they presented it in many different ways that we can make sense of. In the end, it still spreads the same message.

    Stay cool!
    Julianne

  119. Hi,
I watched this videos and found them really freaky. I really liked the way in the second video that they used a person to show the life cycle of a persons digital footprints.
Thanks for putting these videos on your blog.
    Amber

  120. The second video was very interesting, but both were intriguing. I never thought about your digital footprint. The videos show how people can find out information about you, and how whatever page/site you visit, you are being tracked. I think the main difference between the two videos is that one video demonstrates what a one person can do, and the second video is regarding what other people and you can do on the internet.

  121. Hi miss w

I found the videos very interesting. I never really thought about it like that. such as even before your born people find out about you online.
I learnt a lot more about being cyber safe
    -thank you
    – from helena

  122. Hi! I think the difference is that one video shows what a person alone can do and the other is about what other people and you can do on the internet.

  123. That 1st video was very interesting. What I found interesting about it was that even if you just log on you are leaving a footprint.

  124. Dear Miss.W
I think the second video very interesting. Anyways I learned that a digital footprint is like walking on the moon! The footprints on the moon never wear off!just like a digital foot print. So any one can find your profile or anything just from a digital foot print.

  125. We like the second video the best. We know realize that we should be more careful online. It freaks us out that everything that we do on the internet like this comment will stay online forever! We learned that even going in a store can be filmed by a security cameras. Social networks can record every single thing you put and say on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Vine, Twitter and way more networks. If you put a video, picture, or comment online and you delete it, it will never leave. How much did you learn?

  126. Dear Mrs W,
I have never known about Digital Footprints or Digital Dossiers but my mom did. She is being safe and does not let me be social. No instagram, Facebook, Twitter, none of that but the idea of digital footprints and digital dossiers scare me a little. I feel like I don’t want to touch a computer ever again-if that was possible for me. I think those videos alerted me of what could happen if I’m not careful so, thank you, thank you very much.

  127. Don’t put your personal information on the internet or people will know who you are and what ever you post you can’t erase it anymore. Even if you say to erase post it still can be on somebody’s computer.

  128. I liked the second on because it shows how Andy uses Facebook and other stuff and he puts all his information and everyone can see where you were born and how ole you are.

  129. In the first two videos I learned that if your not going to tell a person don’t post it on the internet. Be very careful of what you post. DON’T post personal pics and personal information. Do not post pictures of other people.Always log in and log out of your account because other people can do things to it. When you go some where a GPS can track you and what you are doing. Your Digital Dossier grows with you and follows you and it can be scary what people can do to you.

  130. Dear Miss W,
My friend Devon and me learned that we all have a digital dossier it starts when w are first born then, expands when we get older and until we die. Everything we do, or post on the internet leaves marks to show we were there. Even if you delete a picture, or writing, people still could have seen it, and copied it.

    From,
    Your Friends Haley and Devon

  131. This video was all About your Digital footprint and digital Hosea. I thinks as soon as you put your picture online make sure you keep it safe and also when your friend sent you a picture don’t share it with any body else cause your buddy mite not like that . I have learned never to share private information or my private picture when its private it means don’t share it.

  132. The second video demonstrated how easily it is to gather information about someone without their knowledge. It literally only takes a few clicks of the keyboard, and you can know the person’s name, address, family, daily activities, and even pets. I didn’t know how easy it was to know everything about someone’s life!

  133. I really like this because I got to look at the stuff my family has on the internet and see what is on it from me.

  134. Something that I found interesting in the second video is that, voluntarily or involuntarily, one will have a digital footprint. For instance, information is recorded online at all hospital visits. The majority of people in developed nations were born in a hospital.

Personally, I liked the second video better overall. There were benefits and drawbacks to both videps. Whether or not the benefits were larger than the disadvantages depended largely upon the viewer’s personal taste and background in the topic.

The first video was striking to the uniformed individual. It was pleasant to watch, with decent effects and background music that helped set the mood. However, I found that it did not really have any specific information. It merely mentioned that a lot of information about everyone existed online; however, it failed to mention how this information got there to begin with.

The second video was not as theatrical, but it had more specific information that relates to everybody. The video portrayed the life of an individual known to the viewer as “Andy” and showed how Andy’s digital footprint was created throughout his life, from birth to death. What I liked about this video was that concrete examples were included. For instance: the barcode on a baby at a hospital is recorded online, Google records the IP address of every computer that uses the search engine (whether or not the user has a Google account or not, however, if the user does have a Google account this information is also recorded in the account history), all texts and emails are recorded, Amazon records personal information such as address and products purchased, credit card providers record all items purchased, and service providers for smartphones can track the location of users with GPS technology that is installed in most phones at the time of purchase.

I happened to already know about much of this, but I still believe that the videos were indeed useful and thought-provoking, especially for those who do not spend time considering such things.

Something that both videos failed to accentuate is the fact that the accessibility of the information recorded varies a lot. When internet users register for an account on a site, the information they provide the site with can be easily obtained in some instances. Depending on the security of the site, this information is open freely to all who choose to view it. Even if the information is kept private, it can be hacked easily on unsecure sites. Other information, such as texts, emails, GPS location, and Google searches is incredibly difficult to hack and find, due to the resources available to the companies safeguarding this data. This information is not stored in a user-friendly way, so if somebody wishes to acquire this information they must not only be a professional hacker but must also know exactly what they are looking for.

In general, I think that it is a good idea for one to check privacy settings on all accounts and remember at all times to make information about oneself as difficult as possible to find online.

  135. I liked the second video the best as it showed his much information the internet says about you the difference between these videos is that one shows what’s about you and the other shows what can happen .

  136. The first two videos really send an eye opening message to their viewers. They helped me to realize that nothing on the internet ever goes away and it is nearly impossible to remove something. I never knew that it was that easy for something that you had done to be found. I was also shocked by just how many things we do in our everyday lives on the internet that can be found or copied by anyone.

  137. The first and second video was about how the Internet can be very dangerous and anyone can get a hold of your information. they can also see where you are and what you are doing. It can also be dangerous if you lie about your age because a stranger could think that you are older than you actually are.

  138. Out of the two videos I liked the first one more because of the animation and how it went straight to the point. The second post was ok also because it showed how the footprints can build up.

    -Arian

  139. The first two videos were very educational but not interesting. Didn’t hold my interest sorry.

  140. What I found interesting was that, all the time, you need to be cautious about how much you expose yourself. The third video showed me that even simply posting a picture on Instagram can result in people finding you while knowing information about you. I believe the second video was the most informative. It’s main message was that your digital footprint exists throughout your whole life. It contained many more interesting facts than the first or third one.

  141. I found the videos very interesting because I learnt and saw some things that I never knew.

The first video ( Digital Footprint ) was about you digital footprint and how it spreads and is very hard to erase.
It teaches you about what a digital footprint is and what happens to it overtime.
I liked the video and it taught me new things.

The second video ( Digital Dossier ) to me was more informative and it taught me more things than the first video.
I learnt that your digital footprint starts before your even born and that it can go on until you die.

I found the second one more interesting and I learnt more.

    – Martina

  142. I found both video to be very informative and I enjoyed them equally. I thought the second video was more detailed about ones digital footprint. I was intrigued by how it talked about a persons footprint, from the beginning of their life, all the way to after they have passed away. I also liked how in the first video it touched upon how what ever you post, email or send can be copied, and may have a big effect on your personal and social life.

  143. Looking at the second video really showed me how much is on the internet and how many things we leave behind on there. I think the second video (The one about “Andy”) was easier to understand because they used an example. It’s actually kind of creepy how much the internet has on me. I googled my name and my Instagram username and found references to me that were made and photos from a couple of my accounts. It makes you open up your eyes and realize if you ever do anything dumb on the internet, it will stay there forever.

  144. i found it interesting that anything you sign up for on the inernet leaves a digital footprint.

  145. The second video had more information, I liked the first video better because it had the words and pictures.

  146. After I watched the first and second video I thought how much info you can get on some one just by looking at there twitter or Facebook account and I don’t have a account on Facebook or some other social media network because I don’t talk to people on them I prefer to talk to them face to face or use a phone. When you say thing on the internet you can find the conversation easily but on the phone or personally because you need a recorder to have the conversation

  147. I thought the video with the finger with a barcode on it was vary interesting this is the video I preferred. The difference between this two videos was one asked lots of questions and answered them while the other gave lot of information

  148. I was intrigued by the first and second video, it made me wonder how much of a digital footprint I leave and how I can make it less noticable.
This topic is great to teach kids how to be wary of what they say or do on the web.
Some people don’t get a job because of the digital footprint that they leave behind , then will have no money and will be abandond from society.
This could be all from one mistake that got out of hand.

    Matt

  149. I thought that the second video was more effective in the point it conveyed. I could easily relate to Andy and therefore connect the information that was being given to my own personal experiences. I have also heard many stories of people who don’t get the job that they wanted because of their digital footprint. I think that a good way to check that what you are sharing with the world is positive is to ask yourself whether you would share it with an older family member or trusted adult. Thanks for sharing this information!

  150. Hi Miss.W,
I was really interested in the first video because it is really important to be careful what you post on social media and send to other people.
Our digital footprint is very large because things may be deleted on your device but if someone copys it then it can come back.
    Daniel

  151. We found it interesting that whenever you log onto something you leave a mark and when we put pictures and comments on they will be there forever. Whatever is put on the Internet is there forever. We also found it interesting that by leaving our ‘footprint’ online it is easy for people to find us, people might follow it!

    From Thunderbolts

  152. i have a good footprint when i look up i don’t look up silly things i really do agree with the

  153. Activity 1
Some thing I found interesting in the second video was that almost everything he has done in his life was recorded, or the information at least. I find it interesting that they have the permission to invade privacy in case they need your information. I also thought that whoever puts their stuff on the internet it was okay at the time so it is their fault if some thing happens.

  154. What I have found out that is interesting is how much people can find out about you over one little photo. It’s amazing to see how much our digital footprint effects us or can affect us. So many people can see what you have done in the past including future bosses. It’s really important to leave a good and positive footprint!

  155. I thought that the 2nd video stood out more to me because it’s telling you that it’s not just that’s leaves your own social footprint that literally that anyone you know can give info or data about you and I liked how they used a person to show what happens even by doing nothing

  156. I think I like how the first was created with the different words, but the second video went into more detail.

  157. Something I found interesting about these videos was that you can start your digital foot print before your born and it will continue after you die.

  158. When Is watched the first two videos I found that it was very interesting when the video said that everywhere you go you leave a digital footprint!

  159. What really amazed and interested me was in the second video that if you have a G-mail account, (Which I do), everything that you search in Google is recorded. I never knew that. Now I’m going to be extra careful when searching. It really just amazes me what technology can do us these days!

  160. I thought that the following videos were very interesting and they give a reality check to teenagers that nothing is private on any social media sites. This is really showing that somtimes the internet can be dangerous and isn’t the best option.

  161. Also, some of the differences were that one video asked questions and answered them while the other video showed a lot of information and things that most people wouldn’t know

  162. I thought the video with the finger with a barcode on it very interesting. Although, I did prefer the social media video. Great job who ever made these videos!!!

  163. Something I found interesting about these two videos are that where ever you go, you leave a mark. You have to keep a good digital footprint, or eles anyone can see what you might want others to see.

  164. Something that I found interesting about the second video was the fact that if you have a Gmail account, everything you search in Google is recorded. I never knew this. It just amazes me the things technology can do!

  165. I thought all of the videos gave a good message but the first video really caught my eye because it was set in an interesting way which made me actually think about what they’re saying and if I am or aren’t doing what they are saying.
From the videos I learnt that you should always be aware about what you put online and if it’s appropriate or not.

  166. Hi Ms. W,
I extremely enjoyed both of the videos, and I thought they were all well designed and the voice quality was clear. Something I found very interesting was that our digital footprint starts from when we are only an infant. Because I thought your digital footprint is started when YOU do something online. I found the first video very freaky though, and it seemed like a trailer for a horror movie, but still was very cool.

    Sincerely,
    Felix

      1. Hi Everyone,
I’ve done challenges 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9. You can check them out at the previous link.
        Thanks,

  167. Hi Miss W,

We watched the first video and talked about what we found interesting in relation to leaving a digital footprint:
    – that every time we go onto a website, it leaves a digital footprint.
    – anyone can find you on the internet (we googled Miss Toma).
    – that someone can track you down.
    – that people can see every website you go on.
    – if you put pictures on the internet, anyone can see them if you don’t look after your privacy.
    – people do give out their information like their address on the internet when they don’t know what it is for.
    – if your mum or dad puts pictures of you on Facebook, they don’t as if we do or don’t want our photos there.

Thank you! Lots of interesting chatting about digital footprints.

From Miss Toma and the Grade 2’s.

  168. Hi Miss W,
We watched your first video very interesting. We learnt that
“everywhere you go on the internet, you leave footprints behind.”- Jorja.
“don’t put anything mean on the internet, cause they could see it on the internet.”- Hunter.
“Things can be contacted to anyone without people sending it to them.”-Jessica

Wow, what a lesson for us.

    From Karaka.

    1. G’day Karaka and Miss Webb,
That is one of the most important things to know: whatever you put on the web, stays on the web forever, even if you try to delete it.

  169. Activity one

I think that the videos are very interesting. The second one makes you think about how far and how long anything you put online lasts. When you put something online you think you can just delete it and it’s gone. Poof!!!! No more worry. But, what you really need to remember is that it will be in there forever. So, the video makes you more careful to think before you post.

The difference between the two is that the second one uses a specific example and uses more examples to explain how it work. The first one is more telling you. All together the second one is a much better video in my opinion.

  170. I was very interested in the second video. I’ve talked to my dad before on how your stuff can be seen by anyone and just the simple stuff, I never realized that all that information is tracked and can be found your whole life.
I was kind of thinking about it and it’s actually a little scary. Someone out there may know me and I don’t know them. It was was a little scary that when I googled my name I found a few pictures of me and my google+ page too.
