The next student and class blogging challenge starts on Sunday 6 March 2016.

Why do we need mentors in the blogging challenge?

When I first began the challenge back in 2008, there were only about 200 students taking part and I could visit each of them three times over the ten week period.

But in the last few challenges, there have been  over 1300 students and there was no way I could visit them regularly.  So in 2010 I started asking people in education to mentor a small group 20-30 students over the ten week period of October to December or March to May.

If you register to be a mentor, please keep checking back on this post as I will allocate the students to you and mention in your comment reply who you will be visiting.

Once students start registering next week, I will be allocating mentors immediately so please keep checking out the student participant’s page in the main header above to find out who you are mentoring.

Who can be a mentor?

  • classroom teacher or homeschool teacher
  • principal or senior staff or faculty members
  • trainee teachers
  • students who have taken part in at least two sets of previous challenges
  • educational coaches or trainers
  • regular blogger about educational matters

What do you do if you are a mentor?

  • Visit your allocated student blogs at least three times throughout the challenge
  • Leave comments on posts written by the students
  • Continue conversations in the comments
  • Remind them about visiting the main blogging challenge page each week
  • Contact me by email or a comment if having concerns or problems (contact is on right sidebar)

So you have read the above and have decided you have the time to visit the student blogs, now it is time to register.

In a comment below, mention the following:

  • A short bio of yourself including some interests
  • Link to your own blog, especially a class blog or your personal blog – allows me to check validity as an educator
  • Age group you would like to mentor and how many students

  1. Hi Miss W,
I would like to be a mentor.
I don’t mind what age group (maybe 10-13) but about 5-10 kids.
Is it okay if I am participating in the challenge and also a mentor?

    Thanks,
    Mary-Ellen.

    1. Hi Miss W,
I forgot to say this is my 2nd Student Blog Challenge but my teachers set up a little one for my class last year so this is basically my 3rd.

      Thanks,
      Mary-Ellen.

    2. Hi Mary-Ellen,
I just checked your blog and looks like you haven’t done any of the activities yet this time so you wont be able to be mentor in this challenge. Maybe in the one starting in October. But you will need to have lots of interesting things on your blog between now and then.

  2. Hi Sue,
I was a grade 4 teacher in Alberta, Canada and my students participated in the blogging challenge a few years back. I am now living in Denamrk with my family, and taking a little break from teaching. I’d sure like to work and connect with some kids again though. I know that the challenge is already two weeks in, but if you could use an extra hand I’d be happy to help. I’d be best suited to work with 9 to 12 year olds, and could take up to about 30 kids.

    Cheers,

    http://walkthisway1.edublogs.org/

    1. Thanks Kirsten.
How does Denmark compare to Alberta? Princess Mary is she queen yet? She is from my state Tasmania, Australia.
I have given you a group of 12 year old students. If you find any already have mentors or you can’t leave a comment on their blog, please get back to me with their names.

      1. Great! Princess Mary is very beloved here and people often see her cycling her kids to school on a Christiana bike. Pretty cool. I’m looking forward to working with these children.
        Kirsten

  11. Hi,
I would be happy to help mentor. I teach 4th and 5th grade (9-11 years old) in a public Montessori school in Boulder, Colorado. I’ve been teaching for 15 years, but before that I was a software engineer. I’m also an avid amateur musician. Since my students will also be blogging, I’d like to mentor 26 students, in the 9-11 year old range. Since we are in the US, I’d really like to mentor students from outside the US, if that is a possible choice.

    Here is my class blog, with student blogs linked on the right;
    http://curiosityshop195.blogspot.com/

And here is my class website:

  12. Hi Miss W,
It’s probably a bit late now (sorry!), but I would like to offer to be a mentor
I’m a primary school student from New Zealand, and this is my second year of blogging.
My blog address is here: http://briannal27kns.edublogs.org
I don’t really mind what age group I will mentor (unless my comment is too late), but if possible a group of 12 and unders. I don’t mind how many students I get
    Thanks!
    -Bri

    1. And also: is it alright if I do the challenges, even if I become a mentor? I have to do it for school

      1. G’day Brianna,
Thanks for offering to look after some other students. It will be great if you are both a participant and a mentor.

    2. G’day Brianna,
I have given you some 10 year old students to mentor. They are from two classes in USA – so if your class teacher wants to make connections to those classes, feel free to contact them or I could try to do it for you instead. If you have any problems with the student blogs, either email me or leave another comment here on this post.

  13. I would love to mentor a group of student bloggers. I’m not a teacher but am a published children’s author regularly working in Australian schools. I participated in a student blogging project a few years ago and am keen to be involved in something similar again. I have a tertiary and professional background in IT and am interested in technology, children’s literature and Asia. I am a regular blogger. I would feel comfortable with students of any age and write for readers from K to 8.

    1. G’day Sandy,
Thanks for offering to be a mentor in the challenge. I have given you a group of 14 year old students. They are mainly from the same class in USA. To find the students, head to the list above the header of the blog, scroll down the Google document to the 14 age group and yours is the first group.

Feel free to email me or leave a comment on this post if you have further questions.

  14. G’day Simon,
Thanks for offering to help some of the nearly 2000 students who have registered.

I have given you a group of 12 year old students to look after. They are from classes where the teacher has the students take part in the challenge each year.

If you read my comments to other mentors on this page, you will work out how to find your students and the sort of things to comment on during the challenge.

    1. Hi – I found the students and their blogs. Where are the actual weekly 2016 challenges listed?

      Thanks!

  15. Hello! If you’re still looking for mentors I’d be happy to help. My name is Simon Vasey and I’m an Instructional Technology Coach in Lincolnshire, IL (USA). I work with our K-2 students and teachers. Before that, I was a 3rd grade classroom teacher. My interests are certainly technology-focused! I love learning about coding/CS, MinecraftEDU, drone tech, robotics, global collaboration, makerspace. I’m also a board game geek!

I’d be happy to work with any age level. You can reach me via email or Twitter (@vasey103) Thanks!

  16. Do you still need mentors? I was a mentor last year and I really enjoyed it. My name is Lisa Gado and I am an Elementary School Teacher at a Canadian school in Hong Kong. This year I am the school’s Tech coach so I spend a lot of time at my computer. I would love to spend some of that time reading some blogs. My Grade 5 and 6 Blogging Club will be entering the challenge this year and you can read our posts here https://kidblog.org/class/dsce-blogging-club.

    1. G’day Lisa,
Thanks for offering to be a mentor and for having your students take part. As I mentioned to Janet, with nearly 2000 students already registered, I need a lot more mentors.

I have given you some 11 year old students to look after – they are mainly from New Zealand with the occasional Australia thrown in the mix.

  17. Miss W
I am primary teacher who has recently retired. My class have had edublogs and I felt it took me so long to approve posts, I didn’t have time to officially mentor. Now I have the time and would like to give back by mentoring.
    This is my blog
    http://technotips.edublogs.org
    Thanks
    Janet Moroney

    1. G’day Janet,
Thanks for offering to mentor. I need all the help I can get. The challenge hasn’t started yet, but there are nearly 2000 students registered.

I have allocated a group of ten year old students to you. If you scroll back up through these comments, there are explanations of how to find your students and suggestions for your role of mentor.

  18. Hi Miss W,

This is my third year blogging with my class: http://madamepratt.edublogs.org/.

This challenge will also be the third one I participate in and I would like to commit to mentoring between 10-15 students aged between 9 and 12 years.

Thank you for all your efforts, my students always love participating in this challenge.

    Emmanuelle

    1. G’day Emmanuelle,

Some of your students have a new mentor from Spain – Beatriz Yanguela. Hope she works out well for your little group of 9 year olds.

But back to your group to mentor – I have given you a group of 10 year old students from USA – Mr Geiman’s class.

Again many thanks for having your students take part as well as you offering to mentor.

  19. G’day Ginny,
Thanks again for having your students take part in the challenge. I have found you a group of 13 year old students mainly from the one class of Mrs Colbert.

You can find them on the Google document which is on the page labelled March 2016 students above the image on the main Student Blogging Challenge blog. Scroll down to the 13 year age group and they are in apricot colour.

  20. I have been teaching language arts since 1998 when I completed my student teaching in St. Ives, England. I have taught ages 11-18, in the standard language arts classes as well as more advanced high school courses such as AP Literature and Holocaust Literature. Currently, I am in my third year back in the middle school classroom, and I love working with this age group, especially watching them grow as writers and thinkers through the blogging challenges.

I first had students participate in the challenge several years ago when I was teaching sophomore level language arts, and my middle level students have been participating for the past three years. Since my students love participating in the challenge so much, I would love to help as a mentor. I think I could take on a group of 10-15 students, and I’d love to have similar ages to those I teach, 12 or 13, if possible.

    Thank you!

  21. Hi, I’ve come across this project via Twitter and I’m keen to help out and mentor some students. I’m an Austalian Teacher Librarian at an international school in China. Our school library blog is at http://ycisqdlibrary.edublogs.org It’s been a little quiet since Christmas, but this project has inspired me to liven it up!

    1. G’day Renee,
Thanks for offering to mentor a group of students. I think we had some students from your school take part last year.

I have allocated you a group of 11 year old students. You can find them on the Google document which is on the page labelled March 2016 students above the image on the main Student Blogging Challenge blog. Scroll down to the 11 year age group and they are in blue.

They are from USA, Canada and a couple from New Zealand.

      1. Hi! I had a feeling we’d been involved before – the ICT teacher is across two campuses so I wasn’t 100%. I’ve started with Evelyn’s students and hope I’ve managed to get the right ones. They all said they were 10 in their profiles, but they are in the 11yo group?
        Cheers,
        Renee

        1. Hi Renee,
They might not have updated their about me pages yet. That will be the first activity starting next Sunday 6 March.

  22. I’ve taught computer science to students from class 3 to class 9 for few months.
I’m currently in a volunteer role and working as a Regional Ambassador Lead for Nepal in Firefox Student Ambassadors Program of Mozilla where my job is to mentor and motivate college students in spreading Mozilla’s mission of open web and web literacy. I’ve also participated in GEC 2014
    My blogs:

    http://ujjwalhatuwal.com.np/
    http://ujjwalkoblog.blogspot.com/

Please let me know if I can be of any help.
    Thanks

    1. G’day Ujjwal,
Thanks for getting back to me on twitter last night. I have allocated the 16 year old group to you, but feel free to also visit any of those in the older age groups as well if you have time.

You can find them in the Google document which is on the page labelled March 2016 students above the image on the main Student Blogging Challenge blog. Scroll down to the 16 year old group and you are in a green colour.

  23. i am a secondary teacher of English as a second language in Spain.
I’ve been working with blogs for long, and I really trust in their educative and communicative opportunities which can be reached by anyone anytime.
I am not a English native speaker so I don’t know if that is required or not.
I have also registered my blog of language resources for the classroom.
I’m really busy this term so I would try with a small number of young students
    Thanks and keep in touch

    1. Hi Beatriz,
Would be lovely to have you as a mentor, but which specific age would you prefer? Most of the students will be English speakers but many also have other languages. Would you like a small group of 9 year olds who have never blogged before?

      1. That would be great, I guess I will receive more instructions.
Anyway as I told you I’m engaged in many things at the moment and being my first time, I prefer a small group.
        thanks and keep in touch

    2. G’day Beatriz,
I have given you a group of 9 year old students from Australia, Their class blog is http://madamepratt.edublogs.org if you want to talk to their teacher.

You can find them in the Google document which is on the page labelled March 2016 students above the image on the main Student Blogging Challenge blog. Scroll down to the 9 year old group and you are in a dark green colour.

The first comment you leave is to introduce yourself to the students. Find a post or page they have already written about themselves and leave a comment telling a bit about yourself and that you will be their mentor. You might include a link to your own class blog.

Any comments after that might be continuing the conversation from the blog post, mentioning skills like writing in paragraphs, or perhaps they have garish flashing backgrounds that are hard on the eyes. Or if they have mentioned too much personal information you might make a comment about that. Otherwise just interact with the students and their posts.

Make sure you check out the posts on my main student blogging challenge blog so you know what the topic is for that week.

Thanks again for offering to be a mentor and if you have any further questions get back to me via the comments on this post or through my email which is on the sidebar of the blog.

  24. Hello! I would like to mentor a group of student bloggers. I am a Library Media Specialist in Texas. My interests include reading and playing with my 8 year old son. While I have blogged in the past, I have not blogged recently. I was planning on starting a new blog when I ran across this in my email. I am willing to mentor 20 students of any ages. My soon to be active blog is: Library Fun For Everyone http://cpospisil.edublogs.org
    Thank you for your consideration.

    1. Hi Christa,
Did a Google search and found you at a Texas school. Would you like to look after the 7/8 year old students participating in the challenge? At the moment they are from USA and one from Australia but his is not visible at the moment so will probably be deleted soon.

    2. G’day Christa,
OK you have the 7/8 year old students. You can find them at the top of the Google document which is on the page labelled March 2016 students above the image on the main Student Blogging Challenge blog.

  25. I am a retired trainer of teachers and have tried with some successes and probably more failures in working with some primary school children in a school in Aston, Birmingham,UK (www.atprimary.co.uk) on developing a ‘Science Master’ site.
I like the idea of mentoring in another area. It is likely that the site above will be ‘killed’ at the the end of this term(Easter) due to lack of support/interest.

    1. Hi Michael,
Looks like you did a great job as the Science Master there – lots of easy to understand explanations for primary students. Why not start your own personal blog allowing kids from all over the world to ask the questions. You might get some from the students you mentor. What age group from 8 year olds to 15 year olds would you prefer to mentor?

      1. Maybe 8 – 13 yrs. I have thought about the idea of a personal blog however at the moment I quite interested in the Mentor role.

      2. I like your idea about a Science Master blog but maybe working with and supporting a group of mentee’s will help me refine that idea. I will however look at assisting, as much as I can, the mentee’s progression in the competition.

    2. G’day Michael,
I have allocated a group of 11 year old students to you. They are from the same class in Canada and one student from Dubai. To find your students, go to the main Student blogging challenge blog and above the image find March 2016 students. Click on the link and scroll down the google document until you get to the 11 year old group. Yours is the third group in a mauve colour.

      1. Miss W
Found the list of students. Any hints on what I do then? I looked at the first student on the list. She likes pets and obviously has had lots of messages from fellow students. She is also a child from a separated family. Is my role (which I hope it is) to suggest changes to her blog – maybe change to backroom colours, create an animated ‘pet’, look at her blogs buttons (mine site is pretty awful at that – an evaluation critique).

I recognise there are sometimes ‘safety ‘ measures that have to be applied however I would imagine that the class teacher would be the main person in this role.

Just checking as a new mentor ( it’s probably written down some where)

        Mike

        1. Hi Mike,
I suggest for your first comment on each student blog, you go to their about me page or post if they have one and introduce yourself. Those who don’t have a post or about me page yet, that is their first activity on the post published next Sunday so you should be able to leave them a comment by the end of next week. Any comments you leave after that are up to you but ideas for improving the design of their blog especially if they have garish backgrounds or flashing GIFs that hurt the eyes, writing in paragraphs as well as perhaps too much personal information so that brings in the safety measures.

      2. Evelyn
Thanks for your welcome. I was until last September based in the UK and volunteering at a UK Key Stage 1/2 (6-11) school one day a week supporting science. When I moved, with my wife, to Spain I created the atprimary.co.uk site to continue to support science in the school. That had a small and interesting impact and taught me some of the basics of working on a blogging site. I shall however be careful in interacting with your students and my additional responsibility in the UAE. If you agree I will give each of your students a welcome on March 6th saying who I am and that my role is to give them additional support wrt the tasks that they will be given. I suspect that I will be challenged and learn as much as they will in tackling the challenges.

Please, however, freely critique my mentoring role – it’s will be the first online one that I would/will have done. Hopefully not my last.
        Mike

  26. Hello again, Miss W. 🙂

I thoroughly enjoyed being a mentor in February & would love to mentor students for the March challenge. I am a seventh grade language arts teacher in Ohio.

    Andrea

    1. G’day Andrea,
Thanks for offering to be a mentor again. I have allocated the second group of 12 year old students to you. They are from three different classes if you want your class to make connections. Hope you enjoy being a mentor.

If there are any problems with not being able to access blogs etc please get back to me via email or leave a comment on the blog.

  27. Greetings.
I’d be happy to be a mentor again this year. I’m a media specialist working in an instructional resource center with teacher education students.
I’d be happy to take on a younger age group, but will help out however I can.
Thanks for all your efforts in this great project.
    Dinah Hunt

    1. G’day Dinah,
Thanks for offering to be a mentor again. I have allocated the second group of 11 year old students to you. They are mainly from Ireland; first time this teacher has taken part in the challenge. Hope you enjoy being a mentor.

If there are any problems with not being able to access blogs etc please get back to me via email or leave a comment on the blog.

  28. Dear Ms. W.,

I would like to mentor again this March.
I am currently a Learning Support Teacher in Ireland
(the land of some of your ancestors).

I am best suited to mentoring children from primary school
    i.e 12 approximately and under.

    With every good wish,
    Merry Beau

    1. G’day Merry,
Thanks for offering to be a mentor again. I have allocated the first group of 11 year old students to you. Hope you enjoy being a mentor. I notice there are also many Irish students in the next group of 11 year olds.

  29. Dear Miss W,

I know I “petered out” a bit toward the end of last year’s challenge, and I apologize for that, but there were too many kids who had been assigned to me who never posted anything, and I became disheartened. I would, however, love to mentor about 20 12-15 year olds this year and give it another try. ( I will certainly visit class blogs and comment and urge my students to do the same!)

This year I am subscribing our class blog rather than individual student blogs. Perhaps teachers who want to get started but haven’t embraced blogging as part of their classroom routine would do better with this approach also. I am going to ask for “Guest Student Bloggers” and host them on my site for the challenges.

    My email : pemerson@brielle.k12.nj.us

Thank you, once again, for organizing the Challenge. I will help however I can.

  30. Hello!
I am returning to mentor more students in the spring of 2016.
I am a first-grade teacher in Malaysia, and soon I will start a doctorate program for Instructional Technology.

    1. G’day Brad,
Thanks for offering to be a mentor again. I have allocated the first group of 9 year old students to you. Hope you enjoy being a mentor.

    2. Brad,
At the moment can you also look after the three 8 year old students? If more register later in the week, I might allocate them to a different person.

  31. Hi Miss W,
I retired last June after teaching grades one through four in Grasslands SD here in Alberta, Canada. I had a class blog (Duchess Dragons) and student blogs for three years. I was also lucky to work wth Tina Schmidt of Pennsylvania USA (MrsSchmidtB4) and Myles Webb of New Zealand ( I still comment on his kids blogs). I loved watching my kids skills grow on their blogs and would love the opportunity to work as a mentor. I am enjoying retirement, quilting, long walks with the dog and visiting with family and friends. I would be willing to work with 20 elementary kids.

    1. G’day Marg,
I deleted the email address you gave, just knowing that you have connected with Tina (I have stayed with her) and Myles who is usually a mentor as well, is enough for me to know you will do well as a mentor.

    2. G’day Marg,
Thanks for offering to be a mentor . I have allocated the first group of 10 year old students to you. Hope you enjoy being a mentor.

  32. Hi again, Miss W.

Just to refresh your memory, I am an aspiring library media specialist. I have been an elementary teacher for many years. I would like to mentor 20-30 students of any age again this time around. I enjoy reading and travel.
